Acoustic Accordion Doors
SoundGuard 34 & 40

The most effective sound rated accordion door in Australia

Unifold’s SoundGuard Acoustic Accordion Doors are a practical and high-performing solution for dividing space while delivering acoustic privacy. Designed and manufactured in Australia, this top-hung acoustic accordion door system requires no floor track, and is ideal for schools, offices, meeting rooms and homes.

Available in STC 34 and STC 40, SoundGuard doors outperform standard stud walls (approx. STC 32), offering reliable sound reduction where it matters. STC 34 effectively muffles conversation, while STC 40 offers a higher degree of acoustic separation, which is ideal for private meetings, teaching spaces, and rooms using amplified sound.

Easy for a single person to operate, even in large or tall openings, the durable folding door system glides smoothly on a nylon wheel with ball-bearing. Its sturdy construction ensures lasting performance in high-traffic environments. Designed to support flexible, contemporary learning and working environments, SoundGuard is a trusted choice among architects, designers, and government clients nationwide.

Acoustics at the Heart of What We Do

At Unifold, we consider it a privilege to work in such a specialised industry. Acoustic operable walls have been in service for decades — and so have we. Over this time, our team has taken great pride in not only delivering the highest-quality systems but also in driving the industry forward. That’s why we invest heavily in research, use only the best quality materials, and continue testing and refining our designs to make sure every wall we build performs exactly as it should.

Rw Explained

The performance of an operable wall is measured in a laboratory and expressed as its Weighted Sound Reduction Index (RW), in decibels (dB). RW is a composite rating of sound reduction across frequencies from 100Hz to 5000Hz, when compared to an Australian Standard reference curve.

You may also hear the term STC (Sound Transmission Class) — essentially the same measurement, with comparable numerical values.

Put simply: the higher the RW number, the greater the sound reduction.

Laboratory vs Real Life

It is important to understand that a laboratory result (Lab RW) is not always the same as what you’ll experience in real life. Even a perfectly installed operable wall cannot account for all the imperfections in a building. Sound can “leak” through air-conditioning ducts, ceilings, carpets, and tiles — all of which can reduce field performance by as much as 10–15%.

That’s why we recommend ensuring surrounding structures such as walls, floors, and ceilings are rated at least 6–10 dB higher than the operable wall itself. This ensures your investment in acoustics is protected and performs to its full potential.

Typical RW Ratings & Applications

Lab RW (dB)EffectTypical Use
30 – 35Basic sound reduction for environments with moderate noiseStaff offices
35 – 41Elevated sound reduction for places that requires more privacySmall meeting spaces, consultation rooms
41 – 45Normal voices barely intelligibleMeeting rooms, schools, multipurpose halls
45 – 47Normal voices unintelligibleBoardrooms, training rooms, small conference spaces
47 – 49Raised voices barely intelligibleHotel function rooms, lecture theatres
49 – 53Major function noise controlledLarge function rooms, convention centres
53 – 55Industry-leading performanceHigh-security meetings, premium conference facilities

Note: Real-life performance can be up to 10–15% lower than laboratory results due to building conditions such as ceilings, ductwork, or floor finishes.

What This Means for You

  • Choose a sound rating that is in balance with the surrounding structure.
  • Remember that real-world performance will always differ slightly from the lab.
  • Focus on controlling leakage points such as ceiling voids or ductwork.
  • Don’t get caught up in “numbers’ games” — a 1–2 dB variation is not noticeable to the human ear.
  • Always look for independent, reputable testing (beware of overseas or non-standard tests that may inflate results).

No Shortcuts, No Magic Material

We are often asked if there’s a secret to achieving high acoustic ratings. The truth? There’s no magic material. Mass is the key. Thicker, heavier panels deliver stronger sound reduction. Thin, lightweight options might look appealing but simply cannot perform at the same level. At Unifold, we design with honesty and integrity — using the right materials to achieve the right result, every time.
